Are you sick?

Posted on 30 November 2008 by deel

This is a cut and paste excerpt from thestar.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR: Every month, at least five doctors are found to be suffering from mental illnesses, director-general of health Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said.

He said these doctors were either psychotic or neurotic but still managed to get into medical schools because these schools were not screening students meticulously enough.

“When the doctors complete their two-year housemanship and their applications are submitted for registration with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), they fail to get registered.

“Their supervisors do not certify them as fit to be registered because of indiscipline and poor attitude arising from mental health problems.

“The mental cases range from psychotic to neurotic. Psychotic cases include delusions and hallucinations, and neurotic behaviour includes anxiety, fear and anger due to the competitive environment,” said Dr Ismail.

These medical graduates, totalling about 60 cases a year, are unable to cope with their housemanship as they may have been pressured by their parents to take up medicine.

Dr Ismail said it was disheartening to note this emerging trend due to an inefficient selection process, adding that the mental cases were referred to the Medical Review Panel (MRP).

Since many of these graduates have spent a lot of money on their medical education, the MRP may extend their housemanship and at the same time send them for psychiatric treatment.

“In the event they are assigned to work, they will be thoroughly supervised and counselled by experts and given light duties until their mental condition improves.

“I am not so sure whether we can identify those with attitude problems during an interview unless such problems are obvious,” Dr Ismail said at a forum on Training Future Doctors: Have we got it right?

About 2,000 medical doctors are registered annually from 21 local medical schools and 400 recognised schools overseas.

Different medical schools around the world have different selection criteria for their students, Dr Ismail said.

However, he said that the ministry was also planning some form of examination to check their attitude, knowledge and experience after they complete their final examination.

Most of the mentally ill students, he said, could have undergone pressure and depression while studying and faced difficulty in coping in a hospital environment.

The other weakness was a lack of proficiency in the English language.

Higher Education director-general Prof Datuk Dr Radin Umar Radin Sohadi said the ministry was currently reviewing universities’ curricula to ensure high standards in medical education and training for doctors.

“Uppermost on our minds will be the safety and well-being of patients,” he said.

The Nipah Virus

Posted on 27 November 2008 by blackie

A summary from an article featured in NST.com

The article is about Professor Chua Kaw Bing of Universiti Malaya and his journey of discovering the Nipah virus in Malaysia, which had an outbreak during 1998 in malaysia causing 265 cases of encephalitis and 105 deaths within 8 months.

The first outbreak of this virus happened in a pig farm situated in Ampang, Ipoh. The government had quickly took measures and contain the area, and most experts believe that it was the mosquito-born Japanese encephalitis virus. However, Prof Chua didn’t thought the same way. There are few reasons that why he decided to investigate the matter.

First of all, the manifestation of the disease is the pigs was quite unusual. The disease also showed prevalence in male adults. Both of these points are not JE trait. Despite all the measures taken to contain the area, the disease continue to spread.

Prof Chua was the 5th people to be given the chance to discover the virus. The initial four institution decided to let him do the job. The work wasn’t easy as he need to convince a lot of people that this is probably a new virus and was officially involved in working with Nipah virus in Feb 1999. His work ultimately suggested that the virus belongs to paramyxovirus (for example those causing measles and mumps), instead of arbovirus which is transmitted by anthropods. The discovery of Nipah virus made the government changed the control measures and the outbreak was being controlled. The public thinks that the pigs may have been the reservoir host. Further research by Prof Chua identified that 2 species of fruit bats happened to be the natural reservoirs of the virus.

Editor’s note: It would be really cool if he named the virus with his name!

Disney On Par With Pixar through Bolt!

Posted on 27 November 2008 by flowerhorn

Bolt is the latest computer-animated film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and it was recently released on 21st November 2008 (26th November in Russia). The film has reportedly raked in over $30 million dollars during its opening weekend.

Bolt marks a new chapter in Disney Studios’ history. This is the first full computer-animated film produced by the studio. Previously all animation films by Disney Studios are hand painted. In recent years, Pixar Animation Studios has been producing more popular animation titles compared to the pioneering animation studio. Pixar is now a subsidiary company under Walt Disney Animation Studios. Bolt utilizes a new technology, Disney Digital 3-D to be unique and to differentiate the film from the works of Pixar Studios.

Let’s see why I find Bolt so interesting.

Bolt Chase Scene
Special Sneak Peek

The video above is the Official Preview of Bolt, while the other 2 links contain more scenes from the film itself, which I prefer not to show to you just to keep the (main) plot of the story secret a little longer. If you have not viewed the preview, I shall try to capture your attention through words here.

So what makes me think this film will be a major hit?

Firstly, it stars the voices of John Travolta and Miley Cyrus and fans would be happy to find a Bolt score sang by both celebrities. Next, this film is bound to be successful due to the sheer amount of talents working on it. Bolt is based on the idea of Chris Sanders (director of Lilo & Stitch) and directed by Chris Williams (script writer of Mulan). This will be Chris Williams’ directorial debut. The whole project is managed by John Lasseter, the Chief Creative Officer at Disney (who also held same position while he was with Pixar).

Apart from the castings and background staffs, the preview itself convinced me that this film will be very successful indeed. Not all ideas in the film are original but it incorporates the elements of some highly-popular movies in recent years and these are presented in an unique refreshing style. I would not reveal the plot here but if you do watch Bolt, you will probably recognize elements and plots similar to films and works such as “The Truman Show“, “The Incredibles“, “Spy Kids“, and “The Matrix“, “The Flash” (recognize the thunder?). There is also little (real) surprise to find that the main protagonist in the film is a white german shepherd which is named as Bolt (suprise!) after strings of controversial protagonists in previous animation films such as a lion in The Lion King, a racing car in Cars, toy figurines in Toy Story, a clown fish in Finding Nemo.

I have no doubt that Disney has made an ingenious move in acquiring Pixar Studios and appointing John Lasseter as the Chief Creative Officer at Disney. Starting from Bolt, I am sure there will be many more quality and humourous animations to come from Disney Studios. I sincerely hope Disney and Pixar would thrive for many long years to come and produce more quality works. DreamWorks Animation is arguably the closest competitor to the two giant studios and it has to come up with an idea as original as the first “Shrek” film to challenge them.

So will you be watching this Bolt animation? Do share your thoughts with us when you have watched the preview or the film itself.

Volgo damn not happening

Posted on 26 November 2008 by blackie

Maintain a Volgo-student community site proves to be quite hard. Even harder than memorizing neuroleptic drugs lah. However, I think the other volgo-community site – tulaka.com is kinda cold as well. After analyzing current Volgograd situation, these are some of the possible reasons why it is hard for us to get hits -

  1. Hostel connection yang mahal. I heard people wanna open facebook also need to think few times. LOL. Is this true?
  2. Megaphone connection yang kurap? Heard that it got some PMS thing going on one. Sometimes fast, sometimes not moving at all.
  3. The site is not famous enough. What to do? I don’t know lah. Any suggestions?
  4. Admins are not famous enough (this is not important).
  5. Volgograd people is boring. Studies too busy? Don’t lie.
  6. Volgograd is boring.
  7. Those staying outside not giving face.
  8. Volgotimes not enough controversial post?
  9. Because football season is over?
  10. What you all want lah?

Possible solutions:

  1. Admins gotta turn hiphop so that their life is interesting. So that the site will be interesting.
  2. Need to recruit more playboy playgirls so that we got more gossip to share? So bad lah this idea. Thought wanna be free from controversy.
  3. Volgograd next top model.
  4. Advertise! Ok, banners and posters will be printed and hang in all big and small hostels when got people sponsor.

This post is to show that Volgotimes allow crap. Please write in and publish more!

Butterfingers’ Back!

Posted on 23 November 2008 by Sustagenius!

“Selamat datang… ke masa depan.”

Yessirree, Butterfingers are back and they came with a vengeance! Debunking all the conspiracy theories behind the name of their last album, the lads churned out another, and some say by far the best, aptly-named malay album, Kembali.

Though in the opening track Emmett welcomed us to the future, the songs themselves are full of subtle references to malay music history. A couple of lines straight from kiddie rhymes, allusions to mystical princesses, a sample of keroncong… Everything about this album shouts pride of being Malaysian.

The first song on this album, Joget Global, started with… get this… a syair! The half-irish lead singer successfully brought me back to my primary school years when our teacher forced us to recite syairs. Just when you get comfortable with the soothing tempo, the boys jumpstarted us with a lat-tali-lat-tali-tampong and a heavy metal-ly guitar. And that’s not all. Again the style changed. And again. Very Bohemian Rhapsody-y. Well, what do you expect from the pioneers of the buttersound genre?

And who wouldn’t love Maharani? The menage-trois between the guitar, violin and drum is super addictive but not as much as the opening lyrics – “Mereke kate kugile, lagilah aku suke.” Yep, not Mereka kata kugila but MerekE katE kugilE. If my BM teacher got a hold of this, she’d probably slaughter the band while singing along to the song. It’s that addictive.

The album closes off with Mati Hidup Kembali, a solo ballad by Loque on piano. The word on the street says that it was written by the guitarist for his girl but if you look at it in another way, the romantic lyrics could really be referencing to being high. Umm… right. And there’s something about the chorus that reminds me of an old song but I can’t put my finger on which.

In closing, let me say this. I generally abhor malaysian bands. They sound like they’re cheap rip-off of each other or international icons. But with Butterfingers, I say, they really raised my expectation of the local music scene to an astronomical height. And they do not have to resort to English to rock, either.

Oh, and if you hear radio-rosak sounds, don’t be alarmed. They’re experimenting with sound effects and whatnot which is not my cup of tea.

Track listing:
1.  Joget Global
2.  Bebas
3.  Maharani
4.  Terus Terang
5.  Air Liur di Kuala Lumpur
6.  Lengkap Semula
7.  Merdeka
8.  1000 Tahun (Mahu Hidup)
9.  Gelombang Cinta
10. Mendaki Menara Condong
11. Mati Hidup Kembali
